Position Summary

The Materials Planner / Buyer with Mr. Steam is responsible for planning, purchasing, and managing materials to support production forecasts and operational goals. This role ensures material availability, inventory accuracy, supplier performance, and cost control in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The Materials Planner / Buyer partners closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, and Finance to support production schedules, improve inventory management, and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the supply chain.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute material purchases by analyzing inventory levels, forecasts, and production requirements.
  • Review on-hand inventory, open purchase orders, and demand signals to plan material releases.
  • Issue and manage purchase orders to support production schedules and customer commitments.
  • Procure MRO supplies (maintenance, repair, and office) to support plant operations.
  • Issue supplier nonconformance and corrective action requests; coordinate returns for replacement or credit.
  • Manage the Cycle Count Program (CCP); track accuracy, measure performance, and issue variance reason-code reports.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy to avoid year-end physical inventory disruptions.
  • Negotiate pricing, quality, and delivery terms with existing suppliers.
  • Approve or reject invoice price variances and resolve discrepancies.
  • Identify and qualify new suppliers to improve cost, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Review supplier packaging, documentation, and barcode requirements to support efficient receiving.
  • Support month-end close activities, including resolution of negative inventory balances.
  • Manage inventory transfers between locations as required.
  • Perform make-versus-buy analysis to support sourcing decisions.
  • Identify BOM inaccuracies and partner with Engineering to correct issues.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and implementation of new supply chain systems and processes.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • College degree preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • APICS / Supply Chain Management certification a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in materials planning, purchasing, or supply chain roles within manufacturing.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Experience working with ERP systems and inventory management tools preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
