Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Finishing Supervisor to lead the finishing department and ensure bathware products meet all cosmetic, dimensional, and structural quality standards. The Finishing Supervisor will oversee sanding, patching, buffing, trimming, inspection, and repair processes to ensure products are finished correctly, on-time, and according to customer specifications.
This role requires hands-on leadership, strong quality focus, process discipline, and the ability to coach employees in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise daily finishing operations including sanding, patching, buffing, gelcoat repair, inspection, and rework activities.
- Ensure finishing workmanship meets quality specifications, customer requirements, and cosmetic standards.
- Train, coach, and mentor finishing technicians to improve technique, efficiency, and product knowledge.
- Monitor production flow and staffing to meet daily throughput targets while minimizing bottlenecks and rework.
- Conduct in-process and final visual inspections to identify defects such as voids, cracks, air pockets, surface imperfections, color mismatches, or gelcoat inconsistencies.
- Partner with Quality, Production, and Engineering to resolve recurring defects and recommend corrective actions.
- Enforce finishing SOPs, safety requirements, and work instructions; update documentation as needed.
- Track and report finishing KPIs including rework rates, first-pass yield, cycle times, and labor efficiency.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, materials used, and quality checks.
- Ensure finishing equipment (buffers, sanders, grinders, gelcoat sprayers, trimming tools) is used safely and maintained properly.
- Participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement activities to reduce defects and improve product consistency.
- Promote a clean, organized, and safe finishing environment that aligns with 5S and Lean practices.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of bathware finishing processes: sanding, patching, gelcoat application, buffing, trimming, and cosmetic inspection.
- Ability to recognize cosmetic defects and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Experience supervising or leading teams in manufacturing or finishing environments.
- Solid understanding of finishing quality standards and measurement requirements.
- Strong communication, leadership, and team-building skills.
- Ability to coach employees in proper finishing techniques and process discipline.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced production setting.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years experience in manufacturing, preferably within bathware, fiberglass, composites, or similar finishing environments.
- Previous supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform manual finishing tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Ability to work around sanding equipment, air tools, buffing tools, gelcoat materials, and cleaning chemicals.
- Comfortable working in varying temperatures, noise levels, and fast-paced environments.
