Position Summary

Inspect materials, components, in-process production, and finished products at assigned control points to verify conformance with company quality standards, manufacturing specifications, visual requirements, and documented work instructions. Accurately record inspection results, identify and contain nonconforming conditions, and release acceptable product only when defined criteria are met. The Quality Inspector is a hands-on individual contributor role that may be assigned to any production shift.

Where the Role Fits in the Manufacturing Process

The Quality Inspector supports manufacturing throughout the production process by verifying product and process conformance at plant-defined inspection points. Depending on the assigned area, inspections may occur at incoming material, first-piece, in-process, rework, and final-product stages. Accurate inspection, traceability, containment, and release decisions help prevent defects from moving downstream, reduce avoidable rework or scrap, and provide production with timely quality feedback.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review the production schedule, work order or traveler, model or part identification, applicable specifications, drawings, visual standards, quality alerts, and special instructions before beginning inspection.
  • Confirm that the correct product, material, lot, batch, sample, or production unit is presented at the required inspection point and that required identification and traceability are intact.
  • Perform required visual, dimensional, functional, or workmanship inspections at the frequency and locations defined by the applicable control plan, inspection standard, or work instruction.
  • Use only plant-approved inspection gauges, measuring devices, templates, fixtures, samples, and test equipment; verify condition, identification, and calibration status before use where applicable.
  • Compare observed conditions and measured results to documented acceptance criteria and classify product as acceptable, nonconforming, hold, rework, or other plant-defined status within assigned authority.
  • Identify visible and measurable defects such as cracks, voids, surface imperfections, dimensional variation, finish or color issues, missing or incorrect components, damage, contamination, assembly concerns, or other process-specific nonconformities.
  • Segregate, tag, contain, or otherwise control nonconforming product according to plant procedure so it is not unintentionally moved, used, packed, shipped, or released to the next operation.
  • Record inspection results, measurements, defect codes, counts, rework or scrap information, lot traceability, disposition status, and other required quality data accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Complete required first-piece, in-process, sampling, audit, rework, or final inspections and maintain the inspection frequency established by the plant quality system.
  • Reinspect repaired or reworked product when required and release it only after applicable acceptance criteria have been satisfied.
  • Identify abnormal or recurring quality conditions, questionable specifications, damaged inspection equipment, calibration concerns, product mix-ups, or traceability gaps and escalate them promptly.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality records using plant-approved travelers, forms, scanners, defect logs, electronic systems, or other required documentation methods.
  • Verify that required quality checkpoints, documentation, approvals, and product identification are complete before the product advances to the next manufacturing step or shipment stage.
  • Maintain inspection areas, gauges, fixtures, visual standards, samples, tags, and documentation in an orderly condition and protect inspection equipment from damage or unauthorized use.
  • Coordinate with production, quality, maintenance, material handling, and supervision as needed to communicate defects, clarify inspection requirements, protect production flow, and support problem resolution.
  • Do not bypass inspection steps, acceptance criteria, product holds, traceability requirements, safety controls, guarding, PPE, or stop-work requirements to maintain production rate.

Quality Expectations

  • Inspection activities are completed accurately, consistently, and in accordance with established procedures, specifications, visual standards, and control plans.
  • Nonconforming product is identified and contained before it advances to downstream operations or shipment.
  • Inspection measurements, defect information, disposition status, lot or unit traceability, and required quality records are complete and accurate.
  • Product is released only when defined acceptance criteria and required quality checkpoints have been satisfied.
  • Abnormal, recurring, unclear, or potentially systemic quality conditions are stopped, contained, documented, and escalated before additional product is affected.

Typical Tools and Equipment

  • Plant-approved calipers, micrometers, tape measures, rulers, height or depth gauges, go/no-go gauges, templates, fixtures, and other dimensional inspection tools as assigned
  • Visual defect standards, boundary samples, color or appearance standards, inspection lighting, magnification, comparison samples, and other plant-approved reference materials
  • Plant-approved test devices, scales, timers, thermometers, gauges, meters, or process-specific inspection equipment where included in authorized standard work
  • Production travelers, inspection forms, scanners, barcode devices, lot or batch records, defect logs, quality alerts, and electronic quality or production-reporting terminals
  • Hold tags, defect labels, quarantine or containment materials, sample-identification supplies, cameras, and other documentation or traceability tools used by the plant
  • Approved cleaning, handling, storage, and protective equipment used to maintain inspection tools, standards, samples, and work areas within training limits

Work Environment

  • Indoor manufacturing environment with work performed at quality stations, production lines, work cells, rework areas, material locations, and other plant-designated inspection points.
  • Potential exposure, depending on assigned area, to fiberglass or composite materials, coatings, resins, cleaning materials, dust, odors, noise, heat, humidity, and changing temperatures.
  • Work around moving molds, carts, racks, material-handling equipment, production traffic, machines, fixtures, unfinished product, and other active manufacturing operations.
  • Inspection may require work near wet, tacky, sharp, hot, elevated, or otherwise process-sensitive surfaces; employees must follow posted restrictions and use approved inspection methods and PPE.
  • Engineering controls, machine guards, ventilation, alarms or interlocks, safe-work procedures, product holds, and required PPE must remain in service and be used as trained.
  • Work in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment with extreme heat and humidity in summer and cold temperatures in winter.
